§ 02 — OVERVIEW
ALERT: Due to recent bear activity, bear canisters are required for all backpackers in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. From the Hell Roaring Trailhead go straight through the green gate.
In approximately 1/4 mile the trail forks. The right fork goes to Hardscrabble Lake (another 1/4 mile). Continue straight on the main trail to reach Williams Lake. There is another junction in 3/4 mile. The right branch goes to William's Lake (another 1 1/4 miles). Continue on the main trail which begins to climb steeply. Approximately 7 miles from the start the trail intersects with the Avalanche Creek Trail. To reach the Avalanche Campground go right, or to continue on the Avalanche Creek Trail, take a left. A loop tripcan be made by continuing on the Avalanche Creek Trail to the intersection with Capitol Creek Trail. Continue on Capitol Creek Trail to reach the parking lot just below the trailhead to the Hell Roaring Trail.
