§ 02 — OVERVIEW
Construction of the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery occurred between 1940 and 1942. The hatchery is one of the fish mitigation facilities for Grand Coulee Dam. Today, Winthrop National Fish Hatchery raises steelhead, spring Chinook, and coho salmon for release into the Methow River.
Innovative programs with partners seek new ways of improving hatchery methods and results and improving aquatic habitat. Salmon and steelhead must travel 574 river miles between the hatchery and the Pacific Ocean.
