National wildlife refuges offer us all a chance to unplug from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with our natural surroundings. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is a bit "off the beaten path," but it's well worth the visit! The refuge is a breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife and provides protection for endangered species. The mild winters, bay waters and abundant food supply attract more than 400 species of birds to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, including the whooping crane, one of North America's rarest birds. Visitors enjoy opportunities for hunting, fishing, wildlife observation and photography, an auto tour loop and several kid-friendly trails.
