Overview
Candle Lantern Holiday Program Fort Pulaski National Monument is a historic site located on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. The monument is renowned for its well-preserved mid-19th century fort, which played a significant role in the American Civil War. Constructed between 1829 and 1847, the fort was thought to be impenetrable until Union forces successfully breached its walls in 1862 using rifled cannon fire. This event marked a turning point in military technology and served as the precursor to the emancipation proclamation of 1863. Today, the national monument offers visitors a glimpse into 19th century military architecture and history, as well as beautiful natural surroundings and wildlife.
