The impressive Kentucky limestone structure, built in the Romanesque style of architect H.H. Richardson by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, opened on October 9, 1900. It featured remarkable flourishes such as barrel-vaulted ceilings decorated with 128 panels of multicolored stained glass, bas-relief sculptures, and two alligator ponds on the track level. After passenger rail traffic declined, it took on new life in 1986 as a hotel. Union Station recently completed an $11 million renovation, which has returned it to its original elegance and grandeur.
